It was a gorgeous day for Fabius' Memorial Day Parade. According to one spectator this was one of the best parades ever. The guest speaker was Onondaga County Executive Joanne Mahoney who gave a nicely done short speech thanking the men and women who gave their lives to preserve our freedoms.
The marching band from the Fabius-Pompey Junior and Senior High Schools performed magnificently. Floats from the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Time-To-Grow Daycare, along with the Fabius, Apulia, Pompey Hill, and Delphi Falls fire departments were represented. If any organizations were left out, email the webmaster and he will make sure your float or organization gets mentioned. If there is enough interest for a separate web for this parade please email the webmaster and send him your photos or ideas.
Every Memorial Day the Fabius Historical Society has a military exhibition in the Community Center. Pictures of Fabius residents in their uniforms and other military artifacts from Fabius residents who served. Anyone wishing to donate military items please contact Sandy Beglinger, President FHS at 315-683-5878.

Because of the increased interest in the FESC, the FESC has established a mailing list for those who wish to receive an email of upcoming meetings. You can sign up for the list here
A forum on the Discussion Board has also been set up. This is the place to post questions, comments or ideas. Please do not use the mailing list for this. If someone joins the mailing list 2 months from now, they will not know the information that was previously published on the mailing list.
A community meeting to discuss the grant received by the USDA will be held on 21 Jan 2010 starting at 7pm at the Community Center. Chris Carrick from NYSERDA will present a briefing on wind power.
The presentation can be download here This is a large file, approximately 27MB, so if you only have dial up it will take some time to download.
Studies of a potential community wind power project are starting, thanks to a grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
The project won a $99,000 grant through the Rural Business Enterprise Grant program. The money is supporting a feasibility study on possible sites for wind turbines, analysis of the wind resource and opportunities to form a local for-profit business to develop the project.
The Central New York Regional Planning and Development Board applied for the USDA grant on behalf of the Fabius Energy Steering Committee. The Fabius Energy Steering Committee has considered a number of renewable energy technologies that could support community economic development," said CNY RPDB Senior Energy Planner Chris Carrick. "The idea of a small wind power project of less than 10 MW that could be owned by local residents and generate income that stays in the community has a lot of support. This study will help the community determine how that might be done." he said.
The Fabius Energy Steering Committee has pursued options for a community renewable energy project for two years. The FESC, started by local area residents, wants to see locals benefit more from renewable energy power production, whether from wind power or other options. According to Scott Potter, a leding member of the FESC, this is an important step in achieving our goals.
The CNY RPDB and FESC will organize community meetings to help direct the feasibility study, which will be completed over the next year.
"We’re looking for a development team that represents different segments of Fabius," Mr. Potter said.
After a few community brainstorming sessions, the development team will have semimonthly meetings to work on the project. The development team will issue an RFP in early 2010 to hire a consultant to collect data and work on the feasibility study.
The first community meeting is tentatively schedule for either 14 or 21 Jan 2010 starting at 7pm at the Fabius Community Center. The public is encouraged to attend this important meeting.
The Fabius-Pompey Outreach is open on Thursdays from 4-6p.m. and is located in the lower level of the Pompey Hill Fire House.
Fabius-Pompey Outreach needs your help. Please let us know at 677-3590 of any other services in our Fabius-Pompey School District that we could provide.
Outreach began by providing food to families, now we provide food plus emergency help with heating, Phone A-Friend program, counseling, and referrals, partial nursery school scholarships for children who could not otherwise attend, holiday baskets for Easter, Thanksgiving, and Christmas, and emergency financial help. A local family generously donates funds so that all children coming to the pantry can have a new pair of shoes for school. We have also provided boots and snowsuits.
Families in need of food or services can call 677-3590 any time. Our needs: Canned meats, cereal, macaroni and cheese, peanut butter, canned fruits and juices, spaghetti sauce, and paper products.
We're an ecumenical organization helping families in the F-P School District. We operate a food pantry in the lower level of the Pompey Hill Fire House which is accessible from Henneberry Road.

Mr. Al LaFrance, President of the Fabius Historical Society, stands at the entrance to the Pioneer Museum which is opertated and maintained by Fabius Historical Society volunteers. The museum is located in Highland Forest Park, off of Route 80. You can find out more about Highland Forest Park by visiting its website.
I found Mr. LaFrance to be a very energetic man who also participates in archeology digs. He, along with the rest of the Fabius Historical Society, have a very ambitious plan to preserve the history of Fabius for its future generations. One of the goals is to build a pole barn to store the large horse-drawn farm machinery, along with two fanning mills.
While the horse-drawn planter was donated by the Sweetland family, other historical artifacts are needed. If you have any Grandma "favorites" or Grandpa's "can't live withouts" consider donating them to the museum. Contact Sandy Beglinger, Vice Presideent, at 315-683-5878 to find out if the artifact could be used.
